{"id":1361,"date":"2017-09-02T14:05:14","date_gmt":"2017-09-02T20:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/yogapantsdiary.com\/?p=1361"},"modified":"2020-10-08T14:25:07","modified_gmt":"2020-10-08T20:25:07","slug":"i-am-a-beast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yogapantsdiary.com\/?p=1361","title":{"rendered":"I AM a Beast!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well it&#8217;s over just like that.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve run my race of the season and it came and went so quickly!\u00a0 While I sit around in my post race blues, I guess I&#8217;ll write you guys a post \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>This past weekend, I conquered the Spartan Beast.\u00a0 I usually run the Tough Mudder as my race of the season, but this year I found it a little disappointing.\u00a0 Every year I run the Tough Mudder and I feel changed.\u00a0 It is usually the only race that pushes me to my limits and leaves me feeling accomplished for overcoming my fears in the race and finishing.\u00a0 This year, it just didn&#8217;t feel the same.\u00a0 The race was held in a new location and the course was much easier.\u00a0 Everyone I had talked to felt the same way.\u00a0 So when we crossed the Tough Mudder finish line, I didn&#8217;t feel like I&#8217;d accomplished my goals for the year.\u00a0 We raced really well and I completed all the obstacles, but I didn&#8217;t feel changed.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t feel pushed to my limit.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t learn anything in the race.<\/p>\n<p>So two weeks later, we signed up for the Spartan Beast.\u00a0 The Beast is a 14+ mile mountain trail run with 35 obstacles.\u00a0 Most of the obstacles require upper body strength, agility, and practice to complete.\u00a0 If you fail an obstacle, you&#8217;re penalized with 30 burpees.\u00a0 30.\u00a0 We had never run the Beast before because we always preferred the Tough Mudder.\u00a0 I&#8217;d always heard it was just as hard, but in a different way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Start Line: <\/strong>I haven&#8217;t been so nervous at a start line in a long time.\u00a0 I&#8217;d never run the course at Breckenridge, but I&#8217;d watched the elite team run in on TV the year before and it looked brutal.\u00a0 I heard them announce that the course was just under 15 miles today.\u00a0 There always some shouting at the start line about &#8220;I AM A SPARTAN&#8221; and then it&#8217;s time to run.\u00a0 We made it up the first hill climb fairly easily and I could tell that our trail running training had really helped.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First Miles: <\/strong>In the first miles we covered some obstacles, 7 foot walls, 8 foot walls and a river crossing.\u00a0 We were both feeling strong and excited for the race.\u00a0 Near mile 3-4, we picked up an additional team mate.\u00a0 As you run these races, the people near you tend to hang around.\u00a0 You turn around and help the same person over obstacles and you find yourself playing leap frog on the course with the same people over and over. Finally, I just asked a girl what her name was because she appeared to be racing alone.\u00a0 Emily quickly joined with us and kept our pace.\u00a0 She stuck with us till the end \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1362\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_4081-e1504380851215-838x1024.jpg?resize=525%2C642\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"642\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_4081-e1504380851215.jpg?resize=838%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 838w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_4081-e1504380851215.jpg?resize=245%2C300&amp;ssl=1 245w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_4081-e1504380851215.jpg?resize=768%2C939&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_4081-e1504380851215.jpg?w=1050&amp;ssl=1 1050w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_4081-e1504380851215.jpg?w=1575&amp;ssl=1 1575w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Middle Miles: <\/strong>In the middle miles we covered a lot of the heavy carries.\u00a0 There&#8217;s an atlas stone carry, sand bags, and even a bucket carry filled with gravel.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not easy.\u00a0 The heavy carries leave your legs dead, your heart pumping and your arms weak.\u00a0 And they happened all together.\u00a0 I had been worried about my grip strength for weeks leading up to the race, but it seemed to holding up just fine.\u00a0 Emily kept us going when we needed and we dragged her through the obstacles.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1363\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/FullSizeRender2.jpg?resize=525%2C933\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/FullSizeRender2.jpg?w=570&amp;ssl=1 570w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/FullSizeRender2.jpg?resize=169%2C300&amp;ssl=1 169w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Burpees&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;crap:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are two obstacles that I have failed in the past at other lengths of this race.\u00a0 The spear throw is one chance at throwing a spear into a bale of hay from 15-20 feet away.\u00a0 1 chance.\u00a0 1 fail.\u00a0 30 burpees for Kim.\u00a0 The very next obstacle was the rope climb, no problems here.\u00a0 Then came my nemesis: Mount Olympus.\u00a0 I have always failed this obstacle.\u00a0 I can never figure it out in time before my strength gives out.\u00a0 30 burpees for Kim.\u00a0 The next obstacle was Hurcules Hoist where you pull a sandbag off the ground using a long rope until you hit the bell at the top and then lower the bag back down.\u00a0 I foolishly tried the mens weight, and my hands just didn&#8217;t have the ability to hold on to the rope.\u00a0 30 more burpees for Kim.\u00a0 Immediately following that one was the Rings Rig.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a series of rings and pipes and then you hit the bell at the end.\u00a0 I was so tired at this point that I wasn&#8217;t sure I could do it.\u00a0 If I were fresh, I could no problem.\u00a0 But I&#8217;d just had two failures.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t do more burpees but wasn&#8217;t sure I had the strength.\u00a0 I even cut my hand on the obstacle before I began.\u00a0 I could have skipped it.\u00a0 I could have just given up, in fact in the middle, I almost did. But I didn&#8217;t. And it felt AWESOME.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"525\" height=\"296\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L_uU4iHhDgg?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Final Miles<\/strong>: In the final miles, you feel like you&#8217;re about to finish at any moment.\u00a0 After we passed the Mile 6 marker (not quite half way) we didn&#8217;t see another marker for along time.\u00a0 We missed Mile 7&#8230;..Mile 8&#8230;&#8230;by the time we were in Mile 9, I didn&#8217;t know we were so far.\u00a0 I thought we were at 7.5 and I didn&#8217;t feel like I had it in me to finish.\u00a0 There was still so much left. (Or course I was actually almost to mile 10!) I went to my dark place.\u00a0 I let Dan and our new friend Emily know that I just needed quiet for a while.\u00a0 We covered the next half mile in mostly silence while I got mad at nature, the course, the racing crew, life in general&#8230;&#8230;.and then we saw the Mile 10 marker.\u00a0 I was so excited.\u00a0 I was worried I would fail.\u00a0 I thought I couldn&#8217;t make it the whole way.\u00a0 I almost thought about quitting.\u00a0 And then it came, the relief.\u00a0 When we hit mile 10, I knew I could finish.\u00a0 I think a mile marker has never made me so happy before.\u00a0 We completed the obstacles to the end.<\/p>\n<p>When I crossed the Finish Line of the Spartan Beast, I felt changed.\u00a0 I felt like I&#8217;d overcome fears, pushed myself outside my comfort zone, and accomplished something that I never could have done just a few years ago. I felt changed. \u00a0 I felt strong, like a beast. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1364\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/FullSizeRender1-1016x1024.jpg?resize=525%2C529\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/FullSizeRender1.jpg?resize=1016%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1016w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/FullSizeRender1.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/FullSizeRender1.jpg?resize=298%2C300&amp;ssl=1 298w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/FullSizeRender1.jpg?resize=768%2C774&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/FullSizeRender1.jpg?resize=100%2C100&amp;ssl=1 100w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/FullSizeRender1.jpg?w=1575&amp;ssl=1 1575w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The next day, we raced again.\u00a0 If you complete all three lengths of the Spartan Race Series in a year, you get special recognition as a Trifecta Finisher.\u00a0 All of the medals piece together and it&#8217;s a pretty nerdy\/cool deal to have done all three.\u00a0 We decided to all but walk though the race the next day.\u00a0 The Spartan Sprint is advertised at a 3-5 mile race.\u00a0 I was hoping for 3 since I was pretty destroyed from the day before.\u00a0 It was 5.6 miles.\u00a0 This time we raced with friends and had a great time.\u00a0 We saw them go through the same struggles we had when we started racing together and watched them overcome fears and the struggle to finish.\u00a0 Running the race with friends was a much different experience but I&#8217;m so glad we did both races.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1366\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/59a3615d8666bf20113d4f9c-p.jpg?resize=525%2C350\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/59a3615d8666bf20113d4f9c-p.jpg?w=612&amp;ssl=1 612w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/yogapantsdiary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/59a3615d8666bf20113d4f9c-p.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/>This time I only failed two of the obstacles and finished stronger than I thought I would.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure how much longer my body will allow me to do these sorts of things but I&#8217;m going to while I can.\u00a0 I had a moment on the second day with a fellow racer that summed up my journey on these races:<\/p>\n<p>As we approached the Bucket Brigade, there are two types of buckets.\u00a0 Red for Women (60lbs) and Black for Men (80 lbs) .\u00a0 You fill your bucket up to the holes and then carry it a quarter mile up hill and back down.\u00a0 As I started filling my BLACK men&#8217;s bucket, the volunteers alerted me that I had the wrong one.\u00a0 I insisted that I did not.\u00a0 I try to lift the men&#8217;s weight on every obstacle for as long as I can. So I filled my men&#8217;s bucket and started up the hill.\u00a0 At one of the rest points, a girl questioned be about my bucket but seemed genuinely curious.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So what&#8217;s with you and the black bucket? The red ones are much easier&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>I replied, &#8220;There were days I couldn&#8217;t lift a 20 pound bucket.\u00a0 Today I can lift the men&#8217;s bucket, so I did.\u00a0 I&#8217;m thankful for my strength today.&#8221; Then I picked up my bucket and kept going.<\/p>\n<p>Be thankful for today.\u00a0 Use your strength today.\u00a0 Use your power today!\u00a0 You&#8217;re stronger than you think you are and you&#8217;re capable of so much more.\u00a0 How long have you been comfortable?
